Sense and Sensibility begins after the death of the Dashwood family patriarch. The family take a step down in society and face hardship. They are four women who are virtually penniless. Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne (Winslet) are two sisters with different perspectives on life and interests. They keep one another in line and also support one another through death, hardship and a love and friendship.
