New York graduate student and obsessive runner, Thomas “Babe” Levy (Hoffman) researches history. His father had committed suicide after the Communist witch hunts of the McCarthy era, which had ruined his reputation. Thomas is drawn into a mysterious conspiracy. This had involved his globe trotting brother and his European girlfriend. Also involved is an infamous Nazi war criminal in hiding, Dr. Christian Szell (Olivier). He arrives in New York to retrieve a valuable cache of diamonds. Stolen during World War II from wealthy Jews seeking to flee Germany. Marathon Man includes one of the most agonizing torture scenes ever portrayed. “Is it safe?”. You will never see your dentist in the same way again.
