Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith (Stewart) is the leader of the Boy Rangers. He is appointed on a lark by his state’s spineless governor. Smith then becomes reunited with the state’s Senior Senator, Joseph Paine (Rains). Paine is a presidential hopeful and also Smith’s childhood hero. However, in Washington, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process. His earnest goal of a national boys camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor (Arnold). Taylor then tries to corrupt Smith and also destroy him Smith with a scandal.
