In Slumdog Millionaire the Mumbai Police Sergeant, Srinivas (Shukla) and his superior detain and interrogate an 18 year old suspect. His name is Jamal Malik (Patel) and they suspect him of cheating on a popular Indian TV game show. Evidence shows that Jamal has not had any formal education and has been a career thief as a youngster. They are determined to question him using any method necessary. This is to find out how why he even came close to winning the competition, or anything at all.
