Travis Bickle (De Niro) is a war vet living in New York City. He sufers from insomnia and spends his time working as a taxi driver at night. During the day he spends his time watching porn movies at seedy cinemas. He also thinks about how the world, New York in particular, has deteriorated into a cesspool. He is a loner and the one bright spot in New York humanity is Betsy (Shepherd). Betsy is a worker on the presidential nomination campaign. Travis becomes obsessed with her and believes he has to do whatever he needs to make the world a better place. One of his priorities is to be the savior for Iris (Foster), a twelve-year-old runaway and prostitute. Travis believes she wants out of the profession and from under the thumb of her pimp.
