The Last King of Scotland is set in the early 1970s. Nicholas Garrigan (McAvoy) is a young Scottish doctor who goes to assist in a rural Uganda hospital. He soon meets up with the new President, Idi Amin (Whitaker). Amin promises a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan. He soon offers him a senior position and he then becomes one of Amin’s closest advisers. As the years pass, Garrigan cannot help but notice Amin’s increasingly erratic behavior. It turns into murderous insanity and it will drive Uganda into bloody ruin. Realising his dire situation, Garrigan must make crucial decisions. This could mean his death if the despot finds out.
