Against the Ropes is a fictional story that is based on the character, Jackie Kallan (Ryan). She is a lady from Detroit who became a boxing manager and who had guided several major careers. The film focuses on her relationship with one boxer, Luther Shaw (Epps). He was reportedly a composite of several including Toney, McKart and Hearns. Kallan eventually leaves her husband of 30 years and moves to Los Angeles. She then goes on to become the commissioner of the International Female Boxers Association.
