Teenager Will Burton (Connell) lives in his head, and his head is filled with music. When his mother gets a new job in New Jersey, Will starts at a new school. As the perpetual misfit he strikes up a friendship with a like-minded outsider called  Sa5m (Hudgens). They are both surprised when the school’s “it” girl, Charlotte (Michalka) recruits. She helps Will to help assemble a band to compete in Bandslam. This is a battle of the bands that is “Texas High School Football BIG”. Charlotte’s ex-boyfriend is poised to win with his Springsteen wannabe band Glory Dogs. For the first time in his life, Will finds he is uniquely suited. He is not only able to participate but also to truly make a difference.
