Ella Peterson (Holliday) is a Brooklyn telephone answering service operator. She always tries to improve the lives of her clients. Ella does this by passing along bits of information that she hears from other clients. She then falls in love with one of her clients, a playwright called Jeffrey Moss (Dean Martin), and is determined to meet him. The trouble is, on the phone she always pretends to be an old woman whom he calls “Mom.”
