Alien Nation is set in the near future. Earth has now had its first contact with an alien civilisation. After years of quarantine, these aliens have become known as Newcomers. They slowly begin to get integrated into human society but also become the victims of a new type of discrimination. The first Newcomer police officer is Det. Sam Francisco (Patinkin). Sam is assigned with a human partner who is called Det. Matthew Sykes (Caan). Sykes happens to be a mildly racist veteran. The animosity between them soon gives way to respect. They have started their work together to investigate the Newcomer underworld. Especially that of the Newcomer leader, William Harcourt (Stamp).
